Moving Day: Your Ultimate Stress-Free Survival Guide from D&G Moves
Moving day has arrived! After weeks or months of planning, packing, and decluttering, the big day can still feel like a whirlwind. At D&G Moves, we understand that while exciting, it can also be emotionally and physically draining. Our mission is to remove the stress as well as your belongings. To help you navigate the final stretch, we’ve compiled this ultimate Moving Day Survival Guide, drawing on insights from all our helpful blogs.
The Day Before: Preparation is Key
A truly stress-free moving day begins the night before.
- Prioritise Sleep: It sounds simple, but getting a good night’s sleep on the run-up to moving day is crucial. You’ll need your energy for the day ahead.
- Prepare a “Survival Kit”: As highlighted in our “Pack Like a Pro“ guide, you need to pack an”Essentials Box” and keep this with you in your own vehicle. This invaluable box contains: kettle, mugs, tea/coffee/sugar, juice/cordial, essential medications, phone chargers, snacks, toiletries, toilet paper, and a change of clothes.
- Confirm with D&G Moves: Rest assured, Alistair and/or Callum will be in touch to communicate the team’s exact arrival time and ensure everything is set for a smooth start. Without fail, they will be on hand to move you safely from A to B (or A to storage before B!).
On Moving Day: Stay Calm, Stay Organised
The morning of the move is all about execution and managing last-minute details.
- Pre-Warn Your Neighbours: A little courtesy goes a long way. Let your neighbours know in advance about your moving day. Inform them about the approximate number of vans that will be arriving and how long access (e.g., your driveway, road space) might be temporarily blocked. This avoids friction and keeps things friendly.
- Don’t forget to eat: You might have emptied the fridge and packed away the food, but you need a good breakfast, hearty lunch and snacks along the way, so remember to keep food to one side for the day.
- Pet Care Strategy: Moving day can be incredibly stressful for pets, and they might even try to escape the commotion. Our best advice is to arrange for them to stay with friends, family, or at a trusted kennel/cattery for a few days around the move. This keeps them safe and reduces their anxiety (and yours!).
- Final Meter Readings: Don’t forget this crucial step! Take clear photographs (screenshots for digital meters) of your final gas, electricity, and water meter readings at your old property. Do the same as soon as you arrive at your new home. This protects you from unexpected bills.
- Gather All Keys: Before you leave your old property for the final time, ensure you have gathered all sets of house keys, from family members, neighbours, that spare hidden under the mat, etc. You’ll need to hand these over to your solicitor or estate agent.
- The “Final Whizz Around”: Once the D&G Moves team has loaded everything they can see, do a quick, thorough final walk-around. Don’t forget often-missed spots like the loft, shed, and any outdoor storage. This quick whizz around ensures everything is in the van and nothing is left behind.
Expect the Unexpected (But Don’t Stress!)
Even with the best planning, sometimes things don’t go exactly to script.
- New Keys Not Ready? No Problem! One of the biggest anxieties on moving day is often linked to key handover delays. Rest easy knowing that at D&G Moves, we don’t charge waiting fees if your new house keys aren’t ready when we arrive. We understand these things happen and are flexible to ensure your move proceeds without unnecessary financial strain.
- Emotional & Physical Toll: Moving day is tiring. Allow yourself to feel the emotions that come with leaving one home and starting anew. Make sure you have lots of snacks and lunch to hand. Don’t push yourself too hard physically; that’s what our professional team is for! Remember, we remove the stress as well as your belongings.
