How to pack your belongings for moving day

Pack your own belongings

Table of Contents

Moving house is an exciting step, but packing everything safely is where most problems can arise. If you’ve chosen to pack your own belongings instead of using a professional packing service, it’s important to do it properly.

At D&G Moves Removals, we want your move to go as smoothly as possible. This guide will help you pack correctly, protect your items, and avoid common mistakes.

First Things First: Responsibility When Self-Packing

If you decide not to use a packing service, please note:

  • The customer is responsible for ensuring all items are packed safely and securely
  • The removals company cannot be held responsible for damages caused by improper packing
  • It is also the owner’s responsibility to ensure nothing is left behind

Taking the time to pack correctly will save you stress later.

General Packing Tips

  • Use strong, good-quality boxes
  • Wrap all items in bubble wrap or protective material
  • Seal boxes securely with strong packing tape
  • Label every box clearly with:
    • The room it belongs to
    • A brief description (e.g., “Kitchen – Glassware”)
    • If fragile items inside – state this outside the box and also which way up it needs to packed – with a simple arrow…

This helps our team place everything exactly where it belongs in your new home. As part of our quote we always ask if you are packing yourself, if you would like us to include the above packing materials, we buy in bulk and will more than likely provide them at a very competitive rate.

Packing Larger Items

Furniture

We can help dismantle and reassemble larger furniture if we’re your chosen moving company, but:

  • Remove all loose parts
  • Keep screws and fittings in labelled bags
  • Tape them securely to the item they belong to

TVs (Very Important!)

Modern TVs are fragile and require extra care:

  • Ideally, you’ll have kept the original box (store it in your attic for this purpose)
  • If not, use:
    • Thick bubble wrap
    • Corner protectors
    • A sturdy box
  • Avoid laying TVs flat, keep them upright where possible

These thin, glass-heavy screens are far more delicate than older models.

Mattresses

  • Use mattress protection bags to keep them clean
  • Be aware:
    • All items go into the van as they leave your home
    • Vans are cleaned after every job, but mattresses may still be placed on the van floor

Protecting them properly is essential. You can buy heavy duty mattress bag for this very purposes, they have handles on too, making it easier to move, just so you can see how cheap they are, here is a link.

Packing Electronics, Cables & Accessories

These are some of the most commonly forgotten or damaged items:

  • Pack PlayStations, Xboxes, and consoles in secure boxes
  • Sensitive electronic equipment like hi-fi, if you don’t have the original boxes with the foam inners, please wrap accordingly.
  • Wrap speakers, be super careful with the fronts and connectors at the back…
  • Carefully pack delicate electronics and audio equipment
  • Place cables, remotes, and connectors in labelled bags
  • Keep all accessories together to avoid losing them

Nothing is more frustrating than arriving and not being able to set things up, depending on the size of things like this and the number you have some people find carry these items in their own vehicles are best.

Packing Fragile Items

For delicate belongings such as:

  • Glassware
  • Ornaments
  • Turntables

👉 Wrap thoroughly and box securely
👉 Clearly label as FRAGILE

Top tip: Extremely delicate or high-value items (like a record turntable) are best transported in your own vehicle for maximum safety.
